House of Babur

A small white-walled prayer cell perched near the summit of Sulaiman-Too, the Takht-i-Sulaiman (also called the Babur Mosque) is one of the most visited spots in Osh — for its associations with the Mughal emperor and for the panoramic view from the rocky terrace beside it.

The interior is simply a single chamber with a low ceiling, lit by a few windows. Pilgrims pray and leave coins on the ledges. The walk up takes about twenty minutes from the museum, on a stone path that is steep but not difficult.

A story
Zahir-ud-din Muhammad Babur, founder of the Mughal Empire, was born in Andijan in 1483 and was briefly ruler of Osh as a teenager. He built a tiny prayer cell — the Takht-i-Sulaiman — near the summit of Sulaiman-Too at the age of fourteen. The Soviets blew it up in 1963; the present structure is a 1990 reconstruction.
