Al-Muktafi Billah Shah Mosque

The Al-Muktafi Billah Shah Mosque (also known as Masjid Ladang) is the modern royal mosque of Terengganu, a striking building with a turquoise-coloured dome and minarets visible from across a wide area of the city. Built in the early 1990s, it replaced the historic Abidin Mosque as the state's main Friday prayer venue for large congregations and state occasions. The scale is considerably larger than the older mosques of Kuala Terengganu, able to accommodate thousands of worshippers.

The architecture draws on classical Islamic traditions with a distinctly modern interpretation — the proportions are generous, the dome prominent, and the overall effect is more stately than intimate. The mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times; the caretakers maintain the same welcoming approach as most Malaysian mosques. The surrounding compound and carpark are set within a landscaped garden area. The mosque is several kilometres from the old town centre, so a taxi or scooter makes more sense than walking.
