Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge

The Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge (Jambatan Angkat) is a bascule bridge — a type of drawbridge — spanning the Terengganu River at its mouth. It is one of the few functioning drawbridges in Malaysia and provides the main river crossing between the city and the northern shore. The bridge opens periodically to allow boats to pass, and watching the mechanism in action is a minor but genuine spectacle.

The bridge has become something of a local landmark, both functional and photogenic. Views from the middle of the bridge, looking upriver toward the old town or downriver toward the open sea, are among the best in Kuala Terengganu. The road across it connects to the beach at Batu Buruk on the northern side, making it part of a natural route for anyone exploring the city on foot or by scooter. The bridge lit up at night, reflected in the river, is one of the stock images of Kuala Terengganu.
