The Tian Hou Gong Temple (Heavenly Empress Temple) is a Chinese Taoist temple in the northern part of Kuala Terengganu's Chinatown, dedicated to Mazu, the goddess of the sea. Given the maritime history of the Chinese community here — traders and fishermen who depended on safe crossings of the South China Sea — Mazu worship has been central to Chinese life in Terengganu for centuries. The temple is an active place of worship and a focal point for the Chinese community's religious calendar.
The interior is colourful, fragrant with incense, and busy with offerings. The main altar is richly decorated, and smaller shrines to subsidiary deities line the walls. The temple's festivals — particularly the celebration of Mazu's birthday in the third lunar month — bring large numbers of worshippers. Outside those occasions it is a quiet place, and the caretakers are welcoming to respectful visitors. The temple is in the heart of the shophouse neighbourhood and easy to find.
