Terengganu State Museum

The Terengganu State Museum Complex (Muzium Negeri Terengganu) is one of the largest museum complexes in Southeast Asia, set in extensive grounds about 4 kilometres south of the city centre. The main building — a traditional Malay longhouse structure elevated on stilts — houses exhibits covering Terengganu's natural history, maritime heritage, Islamic arts, and the history of the sultanate. Several separate galleries are spread across the grounds, including one dedicated to the petroleum industry that has fuelled the state's modern economy.

The Terengganu Stone (Batu Bersurat), one of the oldest known inscriptions in Malay using the Arabic script, is housed here. Dating from 1303, it is one of the most significant artefacts of Malay civilisation and essential context for understanding the region's history. The museum gardens contain reconstructed traditional Malay houses and a fishing village. Budget two to three hours, longer if you find the maritime and textile galleries interesting. Getting here without a car requires a taxi or Grab, as public transport connections are infrequent.
