The Pasar Besar Kedai Payang is Kuala Terengganu's main wet market and craft bazaar, a large covered complex near the riverfront. The lower floors handle the everyday wet market business — fish, vegetables, spices, and produce — while the upper floors are given over to batik fabric, brassware, songket woven cloth, keropok, and other Terengganu crafts and produce. It is the best single place in the city to buy local goods.
Terengganu is one of Malaysia's main centres for batik production, and the range here is excellent — you can buy both hand-drawn (batik tulis) and block-printed (batik cap) fabric at better prices than you will find in Kuala Lumpur. Songket — silk woven with gold thread, used for traditional Malay formal wear — is another Terengganu speciality worth examining even if you are not buying. The market is busiest in the morning; the fish section is particularly lively before 9am.
