Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru is the main Friday mosque of KL's most famous traditional Malay village — a community mosque that has served Kampung Baru's residents since the early 20th century. Unlike the grander tourist mosques elsewhere in KL, this is a neighbourhood mosque that functions as a genuine community anchor: religious classes, Quran recitation groups, and welfare activities all operate from here.
The mosque is active throughout the week and most visibly on Friday afternoons, when the congregation overflows into the surrounding streets. The surrounding streets fill with food vendors catering to the post-prayers crowd, making this one of the better times to experience Kampung Baru's street food. Non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome to observe from outside during non-prayer times; modest dress is expected near the building.
