Hsipaw is a small town in northern Shan State, on the Duthawadi River northeast of Mandalay. Before Myanmar's current conflict closed off much of the country, it was one of the easier places for independent travellers to make short treks into Shan and Palaung villages.
The town itself is low-key: an early market, tea shops, river views, and a few pagodas on the hills around the valley. The journey in has long been part of the appeal, especially the slow railway from Pyin U Lwin across the Goteik Viaduct, one of the great colonial-era engineering works in the country.
Travel here now needs careful checking. Shan State has seen serious fighting since the 2021 coup, and routes that were once routine can close with little notice. If you do go, keep plans flexible and avoid putting local people at risk with political questions.
