Maing Thauk straddles the eastern shore of Inle Lake — half the village floats on stilts, half climbs into the hills. A 500-metre teak footbridge connects the two. Cross over and climb the path up through the trees for an hour to a forest monastery with views back over the entire lake.
It is one of the easier walks in the area and a nice break from the boat. There is a small school on the lake side run by a foreign NGO; visitors are welcome to drop in briefly.
