Improbable but real: a working vineyard on the hill east of Nyangshwe. Red Mountain Estate was founded in 2002 with French and German consultants and produces shiraz, sauvignon blanc, and a passable rosé from terraced slopes at around 1,300 metres. It is one of two wineries in the country.
A taxi-bike from town takes 15 minutes; the view back over the valley at sunset is the real draw. A tasting flight is cheap, and there is a restaurant on a wooden terrace overlooking the vines. The wine is honest if not memorable — you are paying for the setting.
