With a guide, a half-day walk into the hills above the valley brings you to a Pa-O village and hilltop monastery. The Pa-O are one of Shan State's main ethnic groups, recognizable by their distinctive dark clothing and colourful headscarves. Bring plenty of water — the climb is steady. The monastery welcomes visitors, and if you're lucky you'll spend an afternoon in the company of monks. Guides can be arranged in town for around $5.
