Pishin Valley

Fruit-growing valley irrigated by ancient karez channels

Fifty kilometres north of Quetta on the road toward the Afghan border, Pishin is a broad fruit-growing valley irrigated by karez — the underground channels that have watered this part of Asia for two thousand years. The orchards run for miles. Bund Khushdil Khan, a small man-made lake near the villages of Tor Shah and Malik Yar, fills with migrating ducks in winter and is a popular spot with local shooters. Note that this is close to the Afghan frontier and travel restrictions are tighter here than around Quetta itself.
