Christ Church

Christ Church on the Mall Road is one of Rawalpindi's surviving colonial-era buildings, a Victorian Anglican church built to serve the British garrison when this was the Northern Command headquarters of the British Indian Army. The building is modest but well-maintained, with pointed arches and a small bell tower, sitting somewhat incongruously in its modern surroundings.

The church is still an active place of worship for Rawalpindi's small Christian community. Visitors are generally welcome during daylight hours; it is worth a brief stop if you are walking the Saddar area, both for the architecture and for the reminder that Rawalpindi's religious landscape extends well beyond its mosques.

A story
Christ Church was built in the 1850s to serve British officers stationed at the nearby Northern Command Headquarters — which is now Pakistan Army's General Headquarters. The congregation that prays here today is a small Pakistani Christian community, but the building still sits on the main square adjacent to the GHQ compound, an Anglican church in the shadow of the most powerful military institution in the country.
