Rawalpindi Railway Station

Rawalpindi Railway Station in the Saddar area is the main rail terminus for both Rawalpindi and Islamabad, handling routes across Pakistan including the important Lahore corridor. The station building itself is a classic British colonial railway structure — brick and arched, functional but with enough architectural ambition to signal its origins.

If you are travelling to or from Lahore by train, this is your point of departure. The Lahore Express and several other services run several times daily, and the train journey through the Punjab plains is a fine way to travel — comfortable enough in air-conditioned class, and offering views of agricultural Pakistan that no road trip quite replicates. The station area is busy and slightly chaotic; arrive with time to spare and be prepared for the usual negotiation around taxis and rickshaws outside.

A story
Rawalpindi station sits at the confluence of the city's old colonial identity and its modern role as twin city to Islamabad. Trains here have the peculiar quality of all Pakistani rail: they are often late, frequently crowded, and yet the journeys they offer — particularly the Lahore run through the Punjab heartland — are among the most atmospheric in South Asia.
