The Shri Krishna Mandir in central Rawalpindi is one of the few functioning Hindu temples in Pakistan, maintained by the small Hindu community that remained after the 1947 Partition or has since settled in the city. The temple dates to the pre-Partition period when Rawalpindi had a substantial Hindu population, and its survival and continuing use is notable given the near-total displacement of Hindus from Pakistani Punjab in 1947.
The temple is an active place of worship and visitors should approach with appropriate respect. It is located in the old city and can be visited in combination with the bazaar areas nearby. The contrast between its quiet interior and the busy commercial streets around it captures something important about the layered history of this part of South Asia.
