Holy Rosary Parish Church

The Holy Rosary Parish Church, known to Kapampangans as the Pisamban Maragul or Big Church, is the oldest and most important Catholic church in Angeles City. Elevated to the status of Minor Basilica, its history stretches back to the Spanish colonial era and it has served as the spiritual heart of the community through revolutions, wars, a volcanic eruption, and the upheavals of the twentieth century.

The church faces the main plaza and is the natural starting point for exploring the historic center of Angeles City. The facade combines different periods of construction and renovation, while the interior preserves devotional artworks and objects accumulated over centuries. The church is particularly associated with the veneration of Apung Mamacalulu — the Santo Entierro — one of the most revered religious images in Pampanga, kept at a nearby shrine and processed through the streets on Good Friday in a dramatic ceremony that draws enormous crowds from across Central Luzon.

A story
The church is known locally as the Pisamban Maragul — the Big Church — and its parish records date back to the earliest Spanish colonial settlement of Angeles. During the Philippine-American War, the church served as a refuge and meeting place for residents caught between the two sides of the conflict.
