Mantigue Island

Mantigue Island is a small coral island about 25 minutes by outrigger banca from Camiguin's north coast. The island has a marine sanctuary with healthy coral reefs and a resident population of green sea turtles that can usually be spotted by snorkellers without any effort — they are habituated to swimmers and feed on the sea grass beds in the shallows.

The island itself is forested and has a small fishing community with simple accommodation. Day trips from Camiguin's north coast resorts are the standard way to visit; most resorts can arrange the banca. Bring your own snorkelling equipment or rent from the resorts before departing. The beach is fine white sand — a contrast to the volcanic black sand of the Camiguin mainland — and the water is exceptionally clear.

A story
Mantigue Island is home to a small community of fishermen who have lived on the island for generations. The coral reefs surrounding the island are protected within a marine sanctuary established in the early 2000s, and the sea turtle population has recovered enough that sightings during snorkelling are now reliable. The entire island is circled by a narrow beach that can be walked in under 30 minutes.
