A second lake on Coron Island, reached by a short scramble up wooden steps from a small jetty. Where Kayangan is for swimmers, Barracuda is the diver's lake. Beneath its still surface the water stratifies into bizarre layers: cool fresh water on top, then a sudden warm halocline that hits around 38°C — the result of geothermal heating from below — before cooling again at greater depth. Diving through the thermocline is one of the strangest sensations in recreational diving.
The lake takes its name from a single large barracuda whose skeleton lies on the bottom; younger fish still patrol the upper levels. Snorkelling is allowed and rewarding, but the magic is best appreciated with a scuba tank. As with Kayangan, Tagbanua rules apply.
