Maquinit Hot Springs

Saltwater hot springs in mangroves near town

Address Sitio Maquinit, Coron, Palawan

A short tricycle ride east of Coron town brings you to Maquinit, where geothermally heated saltwater bubbles up through mangroves into a series of pools sitting right at sea level. The water averages around 40°C — too hot to stay in for very long but a remarkable thing to soak in after a long day of diving.

The springs open in the late afternoon and stay open into the evening; sunset and after dark are the most atmospheric times. The pools sit in a frame of mangroves with the lights of the town visible across the bay. There's no swimming pool feel — wooden walkways link the pools and the surrounding tangle of mangrove forest looks much as it always has.

A story
Maquinit is one of the few saltwater hot springs in the world — the water emerges from a geothermal vent at the edge of the bay and is stratified into pools by low concrete walls. The springs were a Tagbanua bathing site long before tourism arrived and have been managed by the indigenous community since the late 20th century.
