Mount Tapyas

700-step climb to a giant white cross above the town

Address Mt Tapyas, Coron, Palawan

Mount Tapyas rises directly behind Coron town and is the standard sunset destination — a flight of just over 700 concrete steps zigzagging up the steep limestone face to a hilltop topped by a 30-foot white cross. From the top the view runs out across the harbour and the maze of Calamian Islands and, on clear evenings, all the way to Culion to the south.

Allow 30–45 minutes for the climb, depending on your fitness and the heat — start by 4 p.m. for sunset. Bring water; there's nothing to buy at the top. Lights are strung along the staircase so the descent in the dark is straightforward.
