Guisi Lighthouse

The Guisi Lighthouse sits on a small headland on the south-west coast of Guimaras, looking out across the Iloilo Strait to the islands of Inampulugan and Panubolon. It is among the oldest standing lighthouses in the country and has the kind of photogenic decay that the Philippines does well — a rusting iron tower, crumbling Spanish stone outbuildings, and a small bell that local kids ring on demand.

Below the lighthouse is one of the prettiest beaches on the island, with white sand, clear water, and a few small resorts that have not yet outgrown their setting. The combination of historic ruin and quiet beach is the best half-day on Guimaras.

A story
The Spanish-era lighthouse, built in 1894 and one of the oldest surviving in the Philippines, is now a rusting iron skeleton — the original Fresnel lens was looted decades ago and the keepers' quarters are roofless ruins. It still works as a navigational aid, but only because a small modern lamp has been bolted onto the old structure.
