Sampaloc Lake

Largest of San Pablo's seven volcanic crater lakes

The largest of San Pablo's seven volcanic crater lakes, covering 104 hectares and sitting right at the edge of the city centre. A concrete path circles the entire shore -- about three kilometres -- and is popular for early morning walks and bike rides. Freshwater fish farms line the eastern shore, and lakeside restaurants serve tilapia and catfish straight from the water.

The lake is busiest at dawn and dusk, when locals come out to exercise and the light over the water is at its best. If you're making a circuit of all seven lakes (Sampaloc, Bunot, Yambo, Pandin, Palakpakin, Muhikap, and Calibato), this is the most accessible starting point. Pandin Lake, about twenty minutes south by tricycle, is the most scenic of the group.

A story
San Pablo's seven lakes are all volcanic crater lakes, formed by eruptions that created calderas now filled with water. Sampaloc — the largest at 104 hectares — sits just a few hundred metres from the city centre, giving San Pablo the rare distinction of having a volcanic crater as its backyard park.
