The San Juanico Bridge curves for just over two kilometres across the narrow strait separating Leyte from Samar, a slim, arching ribbon of concrete that for decades held the title of longest bridge in the Philippines. Completed in 1973 as a Marcos-era showpiece (originally named the Marcos Bridge), it is supported by 43 spans and rises about 41 metres above the water, with views down onto a scatter of small green islets. You can drive across in five minutes or, more enjoyably, ride a tricycle out from town and walk part of it for the view.
