Sto. Niño Shrine and Heritage Museum

Imelda Marcos mansion turned surreal heritage museum

Address Real Street, Tacloban City

A two-storey mansion built in the 1980s as Imelda Marcos's hometown residence and "shrine" to the Santo Niño, this is the strangest and most revealing museum in the city. Thirteen guest bedrooms — one for each region of the Philippines — are stacked with chandeliers, jars, lacquer screens, and donated art; downstairs, a chapel holds the carved ivory Santo Niño that gives the place its name. The building was confiscated after the 1986 People Power Revolution and is now run by the Department of Tourism, though the Marcos family disputes ownership. Take the guided tour: the staff are unflappable and the stories are excellent.
