Yeongcheon

North Gyeongsang city of mountain temples, grape country, and stargazing.

Yeongcheon sits east of Daegu in North Gyeongsang, on rail and expressway routes that most travelers use without stopping. The city itself is plain, but its outlying sights are strong enough for a spare day: old Buddhist temples on Palgongsan, a mountain astronomy cluster on Bohyeonsan, and grape country that has become one of Korea's better-known wine areas.

Eunhaesa Temple is the best reason to come. It was founded in the Silla period and sits in a forested mountain setting, with important halls, hermitages, and temple-stay programs. South of town, Manbulsa Temple is a more modern Buddhist stop known for its thousands of Buddha figures.

Yeongcheon also has a practical identity. It is one of Korea's grape and wine centres, and the road up Bohyeonsan leads to public astronomy exhibits and one of the country's major optical observatories. With a car, it becomes a varied day out from Daegu or Gyeongju rather than just another inland city.
