Bahiravokanda Buddha Statue

A large white Buddha statue sits on a hilltop south of the lake, visible from much of the city and easily identified by its brilliant white silhouette against the green hillside. The statue is 26.8 metres tall and stands on a multi-storey base containing a small museum and meditation rooms. A steep flight of steps leads from the road to the base; the climb takes about fifteen minutes.

The views from the base of the statue are among the best in Kandy, taking in the lake, the Temple of the Tooth complex, and the surrounding hills. The meditation halls inside the base are open to visitors; shoes must be removed before entering any level.

A story
The Bahiravokanda Buddha was completed in 1972, making it the first large modern Buddha statue built in Sri Lanka after independence. The 26.8-metre figure was constructed during a period of intense Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism following the 1956 Official Language Act that made Sinhala the sole official language. The statue's position overlooking the entire city was deliberately chosen to make it visible from the Temple of the Tooth — a visual statement of Buddhist primacy in the former royal capital.
