Natha Devale is the oldest surviving monument in Kandy, dating to the fourteenth century. It stands on a raised terrace immediately in front of the Royal Palace complex, making it one of the first structures you encounter when approaching the Temple of the Tooth from the main entrance. The white-plastered shrine and its surrounding wall are modest in size but architecturally significant, representing a style that predates the main temple buildings by several hundred years.
The devale receives steady streams of Hindu and Buddhist devotees throughout the day. It is freely accessible and usually quiet compared to the Temple of the Tooth entrance next door. Worth ten minutes on any visit to the temple complex.
