Kandy Clock Tower

The Kandy Clock Tower stands at the main intersection in the center of town, at the junction of Sri Dalada Veediya and Bandaranaike Mawatha. It is a compact colonial-era structure dating to 1922, built as a World War I memorial. The tower is surrounded by the controlled chaos of Kandy's main traffic junction and serves as the navigational center point of the city.

Not worth going out of your way for, but easy to use as an orientation landmark. The area immediately surrounding the clock tower is where the main bus stand, the central market, and the Kandy City Centre shopping complex are all located.

A story
The Kandy Clock Tower was built in 1922 to commemorate the soldiers of Kandy who died in World War I. It stands at the central intersection of the city's main streets on a traffic island that forces tuk-tuks and buses to navigate around it. The tower serves as the informal meeting point of Kandy — "meet you at the clock" is the local equivalent of London's "meet you under the clock at Waterloo."
