Helga's Folly

Helga's Folly is one of the most bizarre interiors in Sri Lanka — a colonial villa on the Kandy hillside that has been decorated over decades into an overwhelming collage of paintings, mirrors, lanterns, dead flowers, photographs, newspaper clippings, and carved objects covering literally every surface. It is simultaneously a hotel, a bar, and a working museum of one woman's obsessions.

The bar is open to non-guests and is the most accessible entry point. Drinks are priced at mid-range hotel rates; the atmosphere is utterly singular. Helga de Silva Blow Perera, who created and presided over this universe, died in 2021, but the family continues to run it in exactly the same spirit. Visiting feels like entering someone's very vivid dream.

A story
Helga's Folly was built in the 1930s as a British colonial mansion and later transformed by Helga de Silva Blow Perera into an extraordinary private collection of curiosities, paintings, and found objects. The late Helga spent decades covering every surface — walls, ceilings, mirrors, columns — with paintings, murals, newspaper clippings, photographs of famous guests, and objects she collected on her travels. The result is as much a personal autobiography in three dimensions as it is a hotel or bar.
