Udawattakele Forest Reserve

The Udawattakele Royal Forest Reserve rises directly above the Temple of the Tooth, covering 257 acres of mixed forest on the ridge above the city. A network of marked trails runs through the reserve, taking between thirty minutes and two hours depending on the route chosen. The forest is home to endemic species including purple-faced langur monkeys, which are habitually encountered and quite bold.

The higher trails offer good views down over the lake and rooftops of Kandy. Bring water and wear walking shoes — the paths can be muddy. An entry fee is charged at the gate. Avoid the paths that lead toward the unmarked areas of the forest; solo walkers have occasionally been followed by persistent touts in some sections.

A story
The Udawattakele forest immediately above the Temple of the Tooth was the royal forbidden forest — entry was reserved for the king and was punishable by death for commoners. During the Kandyan kingdom's final years, a rebel monk named Kobbekaduwe Unnanse lived here in hiding after leading an insurrection against the king. The forest's royal restriction made it an ideal refuge precisely because ordinary soldiers were afraid to enter it.
