Red House Bar District

Outdoor cluster of bars behind the Red House, the heart of LGBTQ+ Taipei

Address Behind Red House, Chengdu Road, Wanhua District, Taipei

The alley directly behind the Red House in Ximending is the centre of LGBTQ+ Taipei: a long pedestrian lane lined with around twenty open-air bars, set up with tables under awnings against the back of the Red House and the adjoining shophouses. Most are friendly to all comers and serve simple cocktails, beer, and a short snack menu.

The scene is at its busiest from about 9pm through to 2am, particularly Fridays and Saturdays — and especially during the Taiwan Pride parade in late October, which routinely draws over 100,000 people through the streets of central Taipei. Taiwan was the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage in 2019; the celebration around the Red House is part of the city's quietly progressive character.
