Baan Dam, or the Black House Museum, is one of Chiang Rai's strangest and most memorable art sites. Created by artist Thawan Duchanee, it is a compound of dark timber buildings, animal bones, skins, carved furniture, and ritual-looking spaces that feel halfway between museum, studio, and personal mythology.
It is often compared with the White Temple because both are near Chiang Rai and visually intense, but the mood is completely different. Baan Dam is darker, earthier, and less interested in easy beauty. Go with time to wander between buildings and let the accumulation of objects do its work.
