Wat Huay Pla Kang is one of Chiang Rai's big modern temple sights, instantly recognisable for the huge white Guan Yin figure that rises over the hills north of town. The complex also includes a tiered pagoda and bright temple buildings, mixing Thai and Chinese visual language in a way that is more theatrical than old.
It is less subtle than Wat Phra Kaeo and less artist-driven than the White Temple, but the scale and viewpoint make it worth a stop. Go for the panorama as much as the buildings, and combine it with the city's other contemporary temple circuit rather than treating it as an ancient monument.
