The King Mengrai Great Memorial stands at a busy roundabout on the northern side of central Chiang Rai, honouring the 13th-century ruler who founded both Chiang Rai and the Lanna kingdom. Locals stop here to make offerings, so it is more than a traffic landmark.
It is a short visit, but a useful one at the start of a Chiang Rai stay. The monument gives context for why the city matters historically: before it became a base for temples, hill-country trips, and border excursions, it was a royal foundation in the northern Thai world.
