The Büyük Saat — Great Clock Tower — rises 32 metres above the old bazaar and was, when it was finished in 1882, the tallest clock tower in the Ottoman Empire. It was built by the city's last Ottoman governor, Abidin Pasha, in dressed black-and-white limestone that echoes the banded stonework of the nearby Ulu Camii.
The tower still keeps reasonable time. It is the natural landmark for orienting yourself in the old town: from its base you can pick out the routes to the Stone Bridge, the Great Mosque and the riverside.
