Aslanhane Mosque (Arslanhane Camii) stands in the old neighbourhood below Ankara Castle, a 13th-century Seljuk mosque that is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city. The interior is remarkable for its carved wooden columns, Seljuk-period stalactite capitals, and the intricately decorated wooden ceiling that has survived largely intact for over 700 years. The minaret is also original.
The mosque is still active and is used for daily prayer. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times; remove shoes and dress modestly. The surrounding streets of old Ulus, with their Ottoman-era houses and small workshops, are worth exploring on foot after the mosque.
