Broken Hill Synagogue

The small synagogue on Wolfram Street was built in 1910 to serve a Jewish community that grew up around the mines — German and Polish Jews drawn to the town in the late 19th century. It is one of the few outback synagogues in Australia and a reminder of how cosmopolitan Broken Hill briefly was at the height of the silver boom.

The congregation dwindled in the second half of the 20th century and services no longer take place. The building is preserved as a heritage site and can occasionally be visited by arrangement with the Historical Society.
