Silverton

Silverton is a near-empty mining town twenty-five kilometres west of Broken Hill, surrounded by red flatness and a few low ranges. A handful of buildings have survived — the gaol, the schoolhouse, the Silverton Hotel — and several have been turned into small galleries by artists who like the light and the silence.

The Silverton Hotel is the place to stop. Mad Max 2 was filmed here and around the surrounding plains, and the pub keeps a small collection of stills and props. From Silverton you can drive on another five kilometres to the Mundi Mundi lookout, which gives the long, curved horizon that appears in the opening shot of so many outback films.

A story
Silverton was a booming silver town of 3,000 people in 1885 when its mines briefly outproduced those of Broken Hill. Then the lode at Broken Hill came in, the population packed up and walked the twenty-five kilometres to the new town — buildings, in some cases, were dismantled and carted across with them. Silverton has been a near-empty ghost town ever since, and has stood in as the outback in dozens of films, most famously Mad Max 2.
