Walter Sully Emporium

The Walter Sully Emporium on Argent Street is one of the finest commercial buildings in Broken Hill — a tall Federation Free Classical façade built in 1909 for what was then one of the biggest department stores in the outback. The verandah, the parapet and the ornate window dressings are all original.

The building is no longer a department store and most of the ground floor is given over to other businesses, but the exterior is worth pausing for, and the street it stands on has a remarkably intact run of late-Victorian and Edwardian shopfronts.
