Collarenebri

Small Barwon River town with important Gamilaroi heritage and a new Great Artesian Basin bore bath.

Collarenebri is a tiny town on the Barwon River in north-west New South Wales, far enough from the coast that the landscape has shifted into dry inland country. It is not a polished tourist town, and that is partly why it is worth a careful stop if you are already travelling between Moree, Walgett and Lightning Ridge.

The town's strongest reason to visit is cultural. Collarenebri Aboriginal Cemetery is one of the most distinctive heritage places in the state, with glass-decorated graves that speak to local Gamilaroi mourning practice and community memory. North-east of town, the Collymongle Carved Trees are another serious, quiet site tied to older ceremonial life.

There is also a more practical pleasure: the Collarenebri Bore Bath, fed by the Great Artesian Basin. That mix of river town, living Aboriginal heritage and hot mineral water is enough to make Collarenebri more than a fuel stop, provided you arrive with respect and do not expect a long list of services.
