Tallangatta is a small town on the Mitta Arm of Lake Hume in northeast Victoria. Its odd claim to fame is that it moved. When the Hume Dam was enlarged in the 1950s, the old town site was flooded and Tallangatta was rebuilt several kilometres west on higher ground.
That history gives the town more character than most lake stops. At low water you may see traces of Old Tallangatta, while the lookouts above the highway give a clear sense of the drowned valley. The lake itself is wide and calm, with the hills of the High Country behind it.
Tallangatta is also one of the better bases on the High Country Rail Trail. The easiest ride runs east from town to Old Tallangatta Lookout, an 8 km section with lake views and almost no traffic. Stronger riders can continue west toward Wodonga or east into the hill country.
