Evans Head

Northern Rivers beach town between national parks, known for headlands, surf, and wartime aviation history.

Evans Head is a small Northern Rivers beach town south of Ballina, quieter and less polished than Byron Bay. Its appeal is the setting: the Evans River, a surf coast, broad beaches, and national park land pressing close on both sides.

This is not a town of big-ticket sights, but it does have enough for a good coastal day. Razorback Lookout gives the easiest view over the river mouth, beaches, and hinterland. Bundjalung National Park stretches south with lagoons, beach walking, fishing, and paddling around Jerusalem Creek. South of town, Goanna Headland has deep Bundjalung cultural meaning and a wilder feel than the caravan-park side of Evans Head.

The surprise is aviation. Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome was a major wartime training base, and the heritage aviation museum keeps that story alive with military and civilian aircraft. Evans Head works best for travellers who want a slower Northern Rivers coast without Byron's crowd.

Things to Do

Evans Head is about the coast first. Razorback Lookout is the quick orientation point, especially around sunrise or whale season. Bundjalung National Park is the main reason to linger, with beaches, river paddling, lagoons, and sandy tracks running south from town. The Evans Head Heritage Aviation Museum adds a different note, telling the story of the large World War II RAAF base that once operated here.
