Gerringong

South Coast dairy-and-surf town where green Illawarra hills drop straight to the Pacific.

Gerringong sits on the New South Wales South Coast, just south of Kiama, where dairy country falls sharply to beaches and headlands. It is small, pretty, and easy to underestimate if you only see the highway turnoff. The appeal is the combination: green hills behind town, surf below it, and a stretch of coast walk that feels wilder than the map suggests.

The town works best as a slow coastal day. Start with the southern end of the Kiama Coast Walk, swim or watch surfers at Werri Beach, then head to Boat Harbour Rock Pool when the ocean is calm.

Gerringong is not a resort strip. It still feels like a working South Coast town with a beach habit, cafes, and farms just outside the streets. That restraint is part of the pleasure.
