Inverell is the main town of the western New England tablelands, sitting on the Macintyre River where the hills start to relax toward the plains. It calls itself the Sapphire City, and that is more than a slogan: gem fossicking, lapidary shops, and the odd sparkle of blue stone give the town a clear identity.
The best day here mixes town history with the country around it. The Inverell Pioneer Village is the strongest local-history stop, while the National Transport Museum is a serious collection rather than a shed of old cars.
Leave time for the river and the surrounding water. Lake Inverell Reserve gives you an easy nature break close to town, and Copeton Dam makes Inverell feel like a base for fishing, boating, and wide inland skies rather than just another highway stop.
