Scenic World is a privately run tourist complex at the western edge of Katoomba that packages four different ways of experiencing the Jamison Valley into a single admission ticket. The Scenic Railway descends a near-vertical 415-metre cliff face at a 52-degree incline — officially the steepest passenger railway in the world — into the rainforest below. The Scenic Cableway, the largest aerial cable car in the Southern Hemisphere, makes the same vertical drop more gently in a glass-floored gondola. At the top of the valley the Scenic Skyway glides 270 metres above the valley floor on a cable car with a glass floor, giving views straight down to Katoomba Creek. The Scenic Walkway at the base is 2.4 km of elevated boardwalk through Jurassic-era coachwood and sassafras forest, past a preserved coal mining tunnel.
Allow two to three hours. Tickets are timed, and booking online in advance is recommended on weekends and school holidays. The complex opens at 9am daily.
