Maitland sits on the Hunter River west of Newcastle, close enough to be pulled into the city's orbit but different in feel. It is older, flatter, and more river-minded, with a history shaped by trade, floods, farms, and the Lower Hunter's early colonial wealth.
The city has more substance than its suburban edges suggest. Maitland Gaol is the hard-edged headline, Walka Water Works is a fine piece of industrial heritage, and Morpeth gives the area its most pleasant historic streetscape.
Maitland is not a rival to the wine country around Hunter Valley, and it does not try to be. It is a good spare-day city for travellers who like old river towns, regional galleries, and places where the past still sits in ordinary streets.
