Marree

Tiny South Australian outback town where old Ghan history meets desert tracks.

Marree is a tiny outback town at the meeting point of the Oodnadatta and Birdsville tracks, north of the Flinders Ranges and far from the comfortable edges of South Australia. It was once Hergott Springs, then a railway and cattle-loading town on the old Ghan route, and today it feels like a place left behind by the map rather than polished for visitors.

That roughness is the point. Marree Railway Station tells the railway story, Marree Mosque recalls the Afghan cameleers who helped open the inland, and scenic flights head out toward the strange, disputed Marree Man.

Marree is not a casual coffee stop unless you are already this far north. But if you are driving the Oodnadatta Track, starting the Birdsville Track, or tracing the history of the old Ghan and the inland cameleers, it has enough grit and story to reward a proper pause.
