Tully

Wet Tropics sugar town known for extreme rainfall and white-water rafting on the Tully River.

Tully is a small town in Queensland's Wet Tropics, about 140 km south of Cairns, and claims the title of Australia's wettest town — annual rainfall regularly exceeds 4 metres. The surrounding country is almost entirely sugarcane and banana plantations, which is the economic backbone of the area.

For travelers, the main draw is white-water rafting on the Tully River, among the best in Queensland, with grade three and four rapids running through rainforest gorges in Tully Gorge National Park. Day trips run from Cairns. The town itself has little to detain you beyond the Golden Gumboot — a seven-metre fibreglass rubber boot celebrating the wettest-town status — but the setting in the rainforest-clad hills is scenic and the drive south toward Mission Beach passes through beautiful country.
