Glenelg is the seaside suburb that Adelaideans have been taking the tram to since 1873. The Bay Tram departs from Victoria Square, runs 11 km through the western suburbs, and deposits you at Moseley Square, thirty metres from the beach. The beach itself is wide, sandy, and patrolled — perfectly good for swimming from October through April.
Jetty Road, running from the square to the esplanade, is lined with fish and chip shops, ice creameries, and restaurants of varying quality. The Holdfast Marina at the southern end has more refined options. The old Glenelg Town Hall and the 1920s beachfront hotels give the strip an appealing slightly faded grandeur. On weekend evenings in summer, half the city seems to be here.
