Naracoorte

Limestone Coast town beside World Heritage fossil caves, wetlands, wool history, and regional art.

Naracoorte is the inland Limestone Coast town that happens to sit beside one of Australia's great fossil sites. The streets themselves are practical and country-town plain, but the surrounding anchors are strong enough to make it more than a service stop.

The obvious reason to come is Naracoorte Caves National Park, South Australia's World Heritage fossil site, where cave tours explain extinct megafauna, fossil chambers, bats, and limestone formation. Add Bool Lagoon after rain or in bird-rich seasons, and the town becomes a useful base for both deep time and wetland life.

Naracoorte also has enough in-town texture to fill the quieter hours: The Sheep's Back Museum tells the wool story that shaped the district, while the Naracoorte Regional Art Gallery gives the main street a small but real cultural stop.
